Essential oils
The following essential oils have been shown in regular gynecology to balance progesterone: yarrow, vetiver and chaste tree (the latter two are also found in the PRIMAVERA Fem Comfort Organic Oil for menstrual relief).
While some essential oils lose their distinctive fragrance over time due to certain components (such as monoterpenes) or their aroma may change, others actually improve with age, maturing like a fine wine. These oils develop greater depth, complexity, and harmony, making them especially valued in natural perfumery. Among these maturing oils are sandalwood, vetiver, cedarwood, and patchouli.
There are many proven medicinal plants for women whose essential oils can help regulate the natural balance of hormones. These include:
- Bergamot
- Sauzgatillo
- Clary sage
- Neroli
- Pink geranium
- Yarrow
- Vetiver
- Ylang-ylang
Almost all essential oils have an antibacterial and air-purifying effect, which can reduce the germ load in the environment. Oils with high monoterpene and aldehyde content are especially potent. Monoterpenes are found primarily in tree and citrus oils, while high levels of aldehydes appear in fresh oils of sweet herbs (such as citronella and lemongrass) and in lemongrass (Eucalyptus citriodora).
- Essential oils are the concentrated power of plants and act on the body, mind, and soul. Their effect is felt even in very small doses, and they should not be applied undiluted directly to the skin. We recommend mixing them with organic vegetable oil or using them as a bath additive. Each of our essential oils has a specific cosmetic dosage recommendation, and you will find many suggested formulas on our website.
- Let your own sense of smell be your guide: it will help you intuitively choose the right essential oil for you.
- Essential oils are highly reactive, meaning they oxidize upon contact with oxygen. Therefore, they can sometimes cause unwanted skin reactions. To avoid this, always use essential oils that are as fresh as possible and consume them quickly. When buying them, make sure they have a tamper-evident cap, and ideally, purchase small quantities, no more than 10 ml. Write the opening date on the bottle.
At PRIMAVERA, you'll only find essential oils with a freshness guarantee. We use inert gas to protect them from oxidation, the amber glass bottles offer 100% UV protection, and the tamper-evident cap ensures product quality and customer safety. The cap breaks the first time it's opened, guaranteeing your essential oil is completely fresh. Plus, the cap is childproof.
The production of valuable frankincense essential oil requires considerable effort. First, the frankincense resin is harvested by hand, a centuries-old traditional method. Today, official harvesting licenses and controls ensure sustainable and safe extraction. The bark of the wild Boswellia tree is scraped, and the resin is collected, but it can only be harvested when the leaves are emerging and flowering. This process must be carried out with great care and expertise to avoid damaging the tree, which also requires periods of rest and protection.
Dried frankincense resin undergoes hydrodistillation in special stills. The distiller must master the process to obtain the best components and a balanced aroma.
PRIMAVERA offers two frankincense oils of different origins: African Frankincense and Indian Frankincense. This essential oil, with its balsamic fragrance, has a purifying and balancing effect. It is frequently used in meditation, as it leads to inner peace. In skincare, frankincense is used for regeneration and is especially beneficial for chapped and dry hands.
In certain plants (for example, rosemary or thyme), the oils of the same species can have different chemical compositions of their components, depending on where the plant was grown. These oils are also named according to their chemotype, as this determines their different uses. Examples: rosemary verbenone / rosemary cineole, thyme thymol / thyme linalool.
Plant waters, also known as hydrosols, are produced during the steam distillation of aromatic and medicinal plants.
During distillation, hot steam is used to extract the fat-soluble and water-soluble components from the plant material. The rising steam releases droplets of oil and the water-soluble active ingredients from the plant, carrying them with it. Upon cooling, these components separate into essential oil and plant water (hydrosol).
This leads to:
-
Essential oil, which contains the concentrated power of the plant and has an intense aroma.
-
Plant water, with the valuable water-soluble ingredients of the plant and traces of the essential oil.
Therefore, the aromatic profile of hydrosols can be unique and differ from the aroma of the essential oil, due to the different chemical composition and nature of the hydrosol compared to the pure essential oil.
The shelf life of essential oils depends on their composition and storage conditions. Most essential oils last between 1 and 3 years in their original sealed bottle. Once opened, citrus and conifer oils have a shelf life of approximately 6 months, while many other essential oils last between 9 and 12 months. Some oils, such as sandalwood, vetiver, and patchouli, only develop their characteristic fragrance after prolonged storage and can be preserved for several years.
To maintain their optimal shelf life, PRIMAVERA essential oils are filled with argon, a noble gas that displaces oxygen inside the bottle and prevents the oil from reacting with it. Storing them under appropriate conditions—in a tightly sealed bottle, protected from light and at room temperature—helps preserve their quality for longer.
In Greek, “ethereal” means “extension of the sky.” This poetic name refers to the characteristics of essential oils: they are volatile, evaporate quickly, and figuratively rise to the heavens.
The most common method for obtaining essential oils is steam distillation. The three main steps of distillation are: evaporation, cooling, and separation.
The plant material is carefully placed in a still. In one method, the material is placed directly into the water and brought to a boil. In the second method, much more common today, the material is placed on a rack inside the still and steam is added. The rising steam dissolves the plant's oil droplets and carries them along. In a cooled conduit, the steam condenses along with the essential oil and is collected in a container called a Florentine flask. The essential oil, generally lighter and floating on the surface, can then be separated from the water.
Agricultural oils is a general term for oils from the citrus family: bergamot, bitter orange, mandarin, lemon, orange, among others.
The name “absolute” comes from the extraction method (Latin to solve – dissolve). Some types of precious flowers, such as jasmine, tuberose, or mimosa, cannot be obtained through steam distillation. Extraction with alcohol also does not produce the desired result. For this reason, chemical solvents such as hexane are primarily used today to extract fragrances from flowers.
The first step is to obtain the ointment-like substance, called concretewhich contains wax components. In a second step, the solvent is distilled with alcohol under vacuum. The absolute It is obtained as a liquid or viscous final product. It is very aromatic; 1-2 drops are enough to perfume 50 ml of base oil.
GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) is a combination of methods that analyzes components according to their molecular mass spectrum and allows for a more detailed quality assessment.
In gas chromatography, the different components of an essential oil are separated and broken down. A carrier gas transports a small amount of vaporized essential oil through a column. During this process, the molecules of the different components arrange themselves, and each generates a so-called "peak," an irregular recording (similar to an electroencephalogram or electrocardiogram). This method allows for the quantification and classification of the oil's components. The authenticity of an oil can be assessed by comparing it to a database and reference samples.
When buying a high-quality essential oil, several parameters can be used as a guide:
-
Important information on the label: Botanical name, production method, part of the plant used, quality (e.g., certified organic), country of origin, batch number, and best before date after opening. For example, in the case of lavender, the botanical name must be included Lavandula angustifolia, which corresponds to true lavender. There are other varieties, such as lavandin (Lavandula x-intermedia) or spiky lavender (Lavandula latifolia), which have different effects than fine or extra lavender (Lavandula angustifolia).
-
Tamper-proof security seal: The essential oil must have a seal that guarantees it has not been in contact with oxygen and therefore has not oxidized. PRIMAVERA essential oils have a childproof seal that breaks the first time it is opened.
PRIMAVERA does not use or sell standardized essential oils. Our essential oils are naturally pure.
Naturally pure essential oils
A naturally pure oil comes 100% from the source plant, whose botanical name must be clearly indicated. It is natural (authentic) and unaltered. This means that PRIMAVERA oils contain no additives and are completely pure. They are not diluted with fractions of other, less expensive natural oils, nor adulterated or standardized with synthetic or nature-identical substances. Fluctuations in the components, which depend on soil conditions, climate, harvest time, and plant type, are not "corrected" in our highest quality oil.
A naturally pure essential oil is a multi-component mixture that can contain up to 500 different ingredients, so it is not yet possible to reproduce it synthetically in its entirety.
Essential oils standardized according to pharmacopoeia (DAB, ÖAB)
These oils must comply with the country's pharmacopoeia standards regarding their components, quantities, and density, ensuring consistent composition and physical properties. If a natural oil does not meet this standard, it is "enhanced" with isolated or nature-identical ingredients, such as geraniol or menthol.
Pharmaceutical standards do not meet PRIMAVERA's quality requirements, so we do not sell standardized oils.
Essential oils have both psychological and physical effects. They promote well-being and quality of life, reduce stress, and provide a sense of release. Stimulating aromas activate and uplift the mood, while calming aromas relax and harmonize.
When mixed into body oils or cosmetics, they exert a warm or cooling, invigorating, revitalizing, nourishing and regenerating effect on the skin.
Organic air freshener compositions and sprays are divided into active groupsThey are blends of several coordinated essential oils that are designed to accompany you in every situation.
For PRIMAVERA, synthetic additives, parabens, and genetically modified plants are completely excluded. Our all-natural formulas are composed primarily of organic ingredients and are made with food-grade emulsifiers, as well as only natural fragrances, colorants, and preservatives.
Our essential oils are also authentic, natural and unaltered, as they contain only the oil from the specified source plant.
Essential oils are composed of a large number of biochemical substances. They can contain anywhere from a dozen to several hundred components. For example, rose oil contains more than 400 ingredients.
The characteristic scent of an oil is usually determined by a specific component. For example, geraniol is responsible for the rose aroma in rose oil, while citral provides the citrus note in lemongrass oil.

Essential oils exhibit varying volatilities depending on their composition. These volatilities influence how long the fragrance is perceived. Three categories are distinguished:
-
Exit Notes (noticeable for up to approximately 2 hours)
Stimulating, refreshing, they promote concentration; mostly conifer and citrus oils (e.g., Swiss pine, orange). -
Heart notes (They develop more slowly, approximately 3-4 hours)
Harmonizing, balancing, inspiring; mainly floral, flowering medicinal herbs and spice oils (e.g., fine lavender, rose). -
Deep notes (fragrance lasts approximately 5-8 hours)
Comforting, strengthening, centering; mostly wood, root and resin oils (e.g., cedar, vetiver, frankincense).
Essential oils are concentrated. For example, it takes about 30 Damask roses to obtain 1 drop of rose essential oil, while approximately 8 million jasmine flowers produce 1 kg of authentic jasmine absolute. Therefore, the contents of a small bottle contain a concentrated dose of information and fragrance.
To scent a room, just 2-8 drops in a fragrance diffuser are enough, and it will feel like you're walking through a citrus grove or the fragrant hills of Provence! The recommended use and dosage for blends, such as massage oils or aromatherapy oils, are indicated on the bottle labels. In general: less is more! Many fragrances only fully develop their bouquet and rich nuances when diluted.
Conversion tip: 1 ml is approximately equivalent to 20-25 drops of essential oil.
